Assessing Learning Difficulties in the WorkplaceAssessing Learning Difficulties in the Workplace provides supervisors, trainers, human resources workers and occupational health and safety teams with skills that allow them to identify and assist individuals who may be encountering literacy or learning difficulties. Various performance problems based on real cases are explored. You will meet capable individuals with reading and writing difficulties; attention, language and memory problems; and learning disabilities. You will learn how to better understand and help these people. The CD ROM format permits the viewer to access information in different ways and levels of detail. References and resources are also provided. Developed in 1996 by Bow Valley College, the University of Calgary and the Calgary Learning Centre as a workplace resource tool for organizations, the package includes a Manual and CD. The Manual provides an overview of the assessment of the range of workplace-related learning difficulties that can arise. The CD illustrates the problems and solutions through a series of five case studies drawn from workplace environments. The Manual presents a five-step problem-solving model which includes problem identification, problem clarification (involving hypothesis generation, information gathering and interpretation sub-steps), development of a plan, implementation, and follow-up/evaluation assessment. The accompanying CD-ROM illustrates the model by providing five scenarios, analysing each, and providing readers with a short bibliography for further information. Scenarios discuss service, middle-management, trades and professional employees who have learning disabilities, attention deficit, and one which many readers have surely suffered, the inability to understand confusing literature explaining new software packages. Use of plain language skills, and the ability to write instructions clearly is explained in the context of this case study in the Manual, and is followed up in more detail in the CD. Assessing Learning Difficulties is an excellent self-awareness tool for environments in which learning difficulties may be present but remain hidden for fear of discovery by others. The package emphasizes that these individuals are capable of learning but organizations must ensure they have an understanding of the individuals’ unique needs, are proactive when provisions of modifications are required, demonstrate cooperation when learning difficulties are identified, and accept the role of professionals in assessing problems and responsive strategies. Conversely, the product is not designed for in-depth analysis or training of assessment, or the diagnosis of specific problems. The people you meet on the CD are:
