Goals of the Project
  • To foster social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language development of children from immigrant families;
  • To provide education in the areas of health, parenting, employment, and community services;
  • To provide support to children and families through informal counseling and home visits.
Project Description
The Community Action Program for Children has provided supportive and educational programs for immigrant and refugee families with children ages birth to six years since 1996. On-going programs are offered as part of a family resource centre. These include: children's enrichment programs (drop-in play, playroom activities, and early literacy), opportunities for parents (parenting information, family health issues, career planning and development, stress management, and other topics), and opportunities for families (toy lending library, cultural celebrations, and recreation). First language counsellors representing eight languages are available to support South Asian, Spanish-speaking, and former Yugoslavian families. The program facilitates integration of immigrant and refugee families into mainstream society, and encourages independent access to community resources.

Written resources include: "Building a Better Future" (about the Mosaic Centre).

Project Description
The Community Literacy Intervention Program (C.L.I.P.) consists of workshops for non-literacy professionals, in an effort to sensitize them to the literacy issues of their clients. The workshops run for two half days or one whole day, and are done with a wide range of professionals, including health-care workers, social workers, and daycare staff. Workshops are given as requested, at the site of the agency which has made the request.
