3.1 Population
The Strait Region is comprised of four counties -- Antigonish, Guysborough,
Inverness and Richmond. The region has a combined population of 59,565
and covers an area of 10,576 square kms. Three of the four counties
in the region experienced a population decline from 1996-2001 with Antigonish
the only county experiencing an increase in population for the same
period. In 2001, Richmond County had the third highest percentage of
First Nations people in the province (4.4%).1 Fifty-eight percent of
the entire population of this region is between the ages of 20 and 64,
which also represents the working age population in the Strait area.
