Benchmark Examples

The benchmark examples on the following pages are intended to provide a clear illustration of the IALS complexity levels. One example is provided for each of the five levels of prose, document and quantitative literacy. Each benchmark example includes:

  • The description, which points out some of the key features of literacy tasks at this level.

  • The question or directive which suggests the goal or objective of the task. (in red)

  • The stimulus document which contains the information required to complete the task.
