Positive Strategies for Managing Change ~ Consultant's Postscript

Question Example What can I do?
7. How do I feel about this change?
  • Am I ready to accept this change?
  • Am I likely to resist this change?
Use the Transition Grid found in Scott and Jaffe (1995) or on the Internet5 to identify your current stage of transition in the change process
8. How can I make a critical evaluation of whether this is a good change for me and the organization?
  • Do I fully understand the rationale and process for this change?
  • What assumptions am I making?
  • Does this change match with the strategic direction of the organization?
  • What are the risks associated with accepting or not accepting the changes?
Consult critical thinking resources, including Edward deBono's Six Thinking Hats, to identify if you accept or resist change(s).

Conduct a (strength, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) SWOT analysis to assess both internal and external factors affecting the organization.

9. Will I accept the change(s)?
  • Accept fully?
  • Not accept at all?
  • Personal action plan?
If you are not going to accept the change(s), how will you resist in a way that is constructive for both you and the organization?
See Pam's Personal Action Plan in the Appendix.
10. How will I manage stress?
  • Exercise
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Escapes
  • Celebrate successes
Identify what is important and controllable using the 2X2 Controllability: Importance matrix in Appendix D. Also identify stress coping mechanisms that will work for you.
