Positive Strategies for Managing Change

Individual Reactions to Change

Although the impact of the changes will be perceived and reacted to differently by the individuals within the organization, it appears that most individuals go through similar stages of acceptance of the changes. In this workshop, you have examined the five-stage process adapted from Elizabeth Kubler-Ross' model of grieving in On Death and Dying. This model is a helpful tool; however, it is important to remember that each individual may experience this in a unique way.

Effective Strategies for Managing Change

In addition to the tips and tools you have learned in the workshop, we have included an excerpt from the recent Ontario Literacy Coalition publication, Assessing Up, Designing Down. Practitioners (and administrators) will find useful tips to help them progress through the changes within the literacy field, including the following:

  • Ensuring they have a clear understanding of the benefits of outcomes-based education for adult learners
  • Focusing on the needs of the learner
  • Learning to be more the "guide on the side" than the "sage on the stage"
  • Are life-long learners themselves
  • Welcome new resources and tools.
