2 1994 International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS), conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, that sampled 966 New Brunswick responses, as published by Statistics Canada in 2000. The IALS survey defined adult literacy as “the ability to understand and employ printed information in daily activities, at home, at work, and in the community– to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.” This definition reflects one’s ability to function in society.
