Host Organization: Pahkisimon Nuye?ah Library System

Program Coordinator: Harriet Roy

Communities served: The entire north.

Program Publications: Activity packages are put together for each year. A collection of student writings is also compiled.

Program Mission and Goals: To promote literacy and to have a coordinated reading program that would use the resources and structures already in place in the communities of the north.

Program Description: Considered both an Aboriginal and family literacy program, the Northern Reading Program is delivered through school libraries. A planning committee is selected from a different area of the north each year. Elders are encouraged to come read to the students and participate in activities put on by the school.

Sources of Funds: 15% of the funding comes from the provincial government and 75% comes from donations.

Unique features of this Program: This program is largely delivered through volunteer commitment.

Major Challenges: The willingness of teachers to design and deliver the program. The teachers often feel overwhelmed about starting something in addition to their regular work.
