Program Description: Considered both an Aboriginal and family literacy program, the Northern Reading Program is delivered through school libraries. A planning committee is selected from a different area of the north each year. Elders are encouraged to come read to the students and participate in activities put on by the school. Sources of Funds: 15% of the funding comes from the provincial government and 75% comes from donations. Unique features of this Program: This program is largely delivered through volunteer commitment. Major Challenges: The willingness of teachers to design and deliver the program. The teachers often feel overwhelmed about starting something in addition to their regular work. |
