Acknowledgments

Over the five years that have passed since CCLOW decided to do this research study, many women have provided guidance, wisdom, support, and advice. Each one contributed to the work and thinking that went into this project and we are grateful for their involvement with CCLOW and the research.

Our appreciation and thanks go to the women who planted the seed for this project: Gladys Watson, Wynne Farr, Jenny Horsman, Riva Love, Susan Witter, Dawn Elliot, and Sharon Goldberg.

The project was nurtured and tended throughout the phase one by Pramila Aggarwal, Evelyn Battell, Frances Ennis, Dawn Elliot, Lynn Fogwill, Michele Kuhlmann, Kathleen Rockhill, and Susan Witter. The workers and students from the four literacy programs across the country who spoke from their experience and so helped shape phase two have our heartfelt thanks.

Several women were involved in the advisory committee at various times in phase two: Pramila Aggarwal, Evelyn Battell, Frances Ennis, Lynn Fogwill, Jenny Horsman, Michele Kuhlmann, Kate Nonesuch, Kathleen Rockhill, and Susan Witter. Each brought a rich and varied perspective to the project and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to the area of women and literacy.

We are indebted to the women in the programs across Canada who had the inner strength, tenacity, and courage to participate in this project. The contact women from the programs - Karen, Shirley, Cathy, Marion, Mary, Pat, Robin, Tannis, Amele, Christeen, Anne, Lynda, Diane, Gail, Wanita, LaVera, Eileen, Nicole, Debbie, Nancy, Jeanne, Paula, Mary Ann, Vicki, Kate - have shown us the power of doing something positive for women in literacy programs. Thank you for trusting us and for working so hard to improve the situation of women in literacy.

A number of women have worked behind the scenes to edit and produce this book: Debbie Mathers, Brenda Beagan, Brenda Conroy, Christina Starr, D' Arcy Atkinson, and Sang-Mi Jeon. Thank you for doing such a wonderful job.

Another behind-the-scenes worker who has proved invaluable to CCLOW is Dianne Palachik. Thank you, Dianne, for helping to hold up the sky!

Collaboration has been a major part of this research project. Tannis Atkinson has played a key role as. a writer editor, and advisor to the project. Thank you for helping to put it all together.

And, our admiration and appreciation go to Betty-Ann Lloyd and Frances Ennis. Their combined energy, vision, dedication, determination, and conviction have made this research study a reality. Both women have criss-crossed Canada, speaking with women about the issues they face in literacy and encouraging women to explore new ways of working and thinking. Thank you for uncovering, speaking out around, and pushing forward on the issues in the field of women and literacy. CCLOW is proud to have been part of this.
