The
Intra-Uterine Device (I.U.D.)
The I.U.D. is a specially shaped piece of plastic
that must be inserted into the uterus by a doctor. It may work in one or both
of the following ways:
- immobilize the sperm
- change the lining of the uterus to prevent
implantation of the fertilized egg.
Some I.U.D.s are covered with very fine copper
wire, others contain a hormone that is slowly released. A doctor will select
the one best suited for the patient. |
