My name is Susan Walsh. I am 37 years old and I live in Nova Scotia. I am a mother of two wonderful boys. Jeramy and Travis are my inspiration. They are my life.
You see, as a child growing up I took things as a joke. I use to tell my parents I hated school. I went to school everyday and did what I had to do. At the end of the school year I got my report card, I failed. My parents told me to try harder, and for the next 4 years it was the same thing failure.
My dad moved out to a small town in Manitoba and after school got out for the summer in 1980. My mother, 3 brothers and I moved to Leaf Rapids Manitoba. I attended the Leaf Rapids Educational Centre as succeeded in school. I passed every grade from grades 5 through 9.
We moved back to Nova Scotia in June 1985. I then attended the Cobequid Educational Centre. I went there from 1985 to 1987. I spent two long years in grade 10. I told myself enough was enough so I dropped out of school.
After my first son was born, I decided then to do what I had to do: achieve my grade 12. I wrote the GED's and got one of the marks. I failed the rest. I gave up. I came home and told my boyfriend and my parents I failed once again.
After my second son was born, I decided once again to try. I didn't know what else to do. As time went by I sat and watched my oldest son do his homework every night. He would ask me "mom if you could go back to school, would you go?" My answer was yes I would but I am too old.
Just two months ago I decided to check into things and I heard about the Colchester Adult Learning Association (CALA). I called and was accepted. My boyfriend, my sons and my parents are proud of me for deciding to go back to school.
So you see, that is why I came back to school. I have dreamed of this day for so long. I can't believe I am here attending school and setting my goals for a grade 12 diploma. I love school and I am happy to be here.
