The following story comes to us from Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The author, Xiaoying Bi, came to Canada from China early last year. She is a horticulturist as well as an avid gardener. Xiaoying is very keen to improve her English language skills. The story below was assigned as an activity during Halloween week. The first few words were provided and each student wrote the rest of his or her own text.
It was a dark night. I was walking down the street. Suddenly, I heard a shriek from the wood. I was so scared that I couldn't move at all. I stayed there for a few minutes and tried to figure that out. At the same time, I heard the sound of footsteps, nearer and nearer. I hid myself behind the bush and observed what was going on. I saw a figure coming out from the wood who was wearing a ghost-mask. He was looking around, seemed to be looking for something. At the same time, I saw he was wearing a pair of casual shoes branded "playboy", but the brand of one shoe was covered with a sticker. Suddenly I knew he was Shu, my husband!
I sneaked on to Shu's back, and screamed suddenly. He was really scared, and began to cry. That was so funny, I couldn't help laughing. Then he realized it was me. I told him, "tou ji bu cheng, fan shi yi ba mi." It means someone would have stolen chicken, didn't get any chicken, nevertheless he lost some grain. Shu would have scared me, but actually I scared him!
Do you want to know the story of "playboy"? Be patient, next time!
