This poem was taken with permission from a collection of stories written by the students of the school at Stony Mountain Correctional Institute, Manitoba, entitled Spirit Within Our Dreams, p.67.

by L. Sutherland

As I rise
into the sun's trail
I bid farewell
to Mother Earth
to the people
to the animals.

As I go forth
to the Great Spirit
I am proud
as I did well.

There is a reason
why I must leave early
so do not weep
as my spirit still lives.
