The following story was written by Jennifer Gleave, from Arichat, Nova Scotia. Jennifer moved from the United Kingdom to Canada two years ago, with her husband and family. She loves to write poems and short stories, and is currently studying for her GED with the Richmond County Literacy Network, which is on Cape Breton Island. This country inspires her to write. The scenery is so beautiful, and the landscape adorns such lovely colours, such as the serene blue of the ocean as she looks outside her window, the crisp white purity of the snow falling in the winter, looking like a picture postcard when just settled.
In my spare time I love to write especially poetry.
This country inspires me to write. The scenery is so beautiful, and the landscape adorns such lovely colors. The serene blue of the ocean as I look outside my window, the crisp white purity of the snow falling in the winter, looking like a picture postcard when just settled. The summer sun beaming down on my children as they laugh and splash about in the garden pool, and of course Christmas, when houses are decorated, and trees twinkle through the curtains.
These things keep me focused, on what I love to do.
I don't have a set time to write, it just happens. I get and idea and I have to stop what I'm doing and jot it down. Sometimes I'm in the car and I'll pull over, other times I wake up with an idea in my head, and creep downstairs quietly with my notepad. But my favorite place to write is while watching the ocean. The flowing ebb splashing against the rocks, and the light on the waves as they sparkle brightly.
I belong to a writing club. I love then fact that we are all there for the same reason, there is no discrimination against age, gender, or religion, because we all have the same interest, we love to write.
I have had eight poems published in various books, and one short story. I have won four meals for two in local restaurants, a weekend away, and I have even met the mayor where I used to live, because I helped to publish a book of verse, whose profits went to our local hospital's sick children's ward.
I will never give up, I will write as long as I can breathe. My writing is
something I can hand down to my grandchildren, for them to say
And my dream, well my dream is to be famous one day, and have my own book
published. You never never know, just remember my name Jennifer Gleave. For if
I ever achieve my dream, you can say
"I knew her, she was always
