Julie Lynn Stanhope is a student from Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the one to one tutoring program at the Keshen Goodman Public Library with Coordinator Melissa Michels. Julie works with her tutor Sandra Blank every week. In 2005, she won two gold medals for skating at the Special Olympics in Nagano, Japan.
My skating partner lost his balance then I fell to the ice. It was an accident but I couldn’t get up.
Mary Ann (my coach) and James (my partner) helped me into a wheelchair, then into a car and then to the hospital emergency.
I had a lot of x-rays and drugs then I had surgery to put two screws into the ankle bones before the doctor put a big cast on.
After two weeks I came home. I went back to the hospital and got a small cast. I moved around using a wheelchair, a walker, and finally crutches. Physio helped me.
This accident happened October 7, 2004. The World’s Special Olympic skating championship was to be February 2005 in Nagano, Japan. Would I make it? I wasn’t allowed to train until January 2005, but I came home with two gold medals and memories of a wonderful trip.
