II. Guided Practice

The instructor:

  1. Reviews the steps in the Self-Questioning strategy (Box 2) and reinforces the rationale for questioning.

  2. Using Box 2 as a guide, invites participants to ask themselves a question about first: the title and then: the cover picture.

    "What are you wondering about"?

  3. Dealing with each aspect in turn, solicits oral responses and writes them on chart paper under the heading Before Reading.

    "What questions did you ask"?

  4. Directs participants to read silently to the end of the second page to find answers to their questions and generate new ones. Then conducts an oral discussion to discover which questions have been answered or partially answered, adding the new questions to the chart, this time under the heading During Reading.

  5. Directs participants and volunteers to read the remainder of the story, practising the strategy together in their small groups.

  6. Displays the chart (Box 3) which provides a visual reminder of their task and

  7. Distributes the paper.

BOX 3: GROUP TASK

  1. Look at the title and the cover picture. Ask questions.

  2. Record the questions. Read together to discover answers.

  3. Stop and notice when you find an answer. Discuss the story.

  4. Generate new questions. Continue reading, repeating the procedure as you progress through the book.
