SESSION TWELVE: APPRECIATING FOLKLORE AS A LITERARY GENRE (CONTINUED)

Specific Objectives:
  1. to expand the appreciation of folktales as a genre.

  2. to reinforce the use of story structure as a framework for both understanding and remembering stories.

  3. to heighten response and apply literature to life - inferring themes.

  4. to practice fix-up strategies for inferring word meanings from context.
Procedure

Introduction

The instructor:
  1. Recaps the story map outlining Episode 1 of The Weaving of a Dream

  2. Reviews the story map for texts with multiple episodes (Box 16, Appendix E) and

  3. Directs participants to:

    a) reread the story The Weaving of a Dream: and

    b) complete their story maps.
II. Group Activity/Task

In small groups, participants and volunteers complete the reading of The Weaving of a Dream and fill in their story map.

III. Summarizing Concepts

The instructor:
  1. Leads a discussion with participants comparing their independently completed maps for The Weaving of a Dream with a sample map. (Refer to Boxes 18 and 19 for sample maps of Episodes 2, 3 and 4.)

    NOTE: The instructor's version of the story map serves as a guide to the discussion. There is no one "correct" map.

  2. Facilitates a discussion regarding the overall theme(s) or message of the story (see Theme, Box 19) and

  3. Based on words identified by the participants as troublesome, conducts a
    mini- lesson on word meanings either at this time or in the next session.
