BOX 23: WORD LEVEL FIX-UP STRATEGIES
When you come to a word you do not understand try:
  1. Skipping over the word. The word may not be central to the overall story

  2. Reading further into the story. The author may explain or give cues about what the word means in the next few sentences.

  3. Going back in the story a bit and retreading the part just before the word.

  4. Looking at the title, the pictures and the headings.

  5. Substituting a word that you think means the same.

  6. Looking up the word in the dictionary or

  7. Asking someone for help.
