BOX 23: WORD LEVEL FIX-UP STRATEGIES
When you come to a word you do not understand try:
- Skipping over the word. The word may not be central to the
overall story
- Reading further into the story. The author may explain or give
cues about what the word means in the next few sentences.
- Going back in the story a bit and retreading the part just
before the word.
- Looking at the title, the pictures and the headings.
- Substituting a word that you think means the same.
- Looking up the word in the dictionary or
- Asking someone for help.
