Times are set up to visit the library, in-class or the public library, and at each session in the library, the families sign out two to three books along with a reading log. Once they have finished with their books, they fill in the log with the title, author, date started, date finished and what they thought about the book. Once complete, they return the books and sign out more.

There is no competition in this program. The family reading successes are celebrated by having a party each month. At the parties, families talk about the books they read and why they liked them. Some of the theme parties could include:

• “Here's the scoop on reading” ice cream party
• “Hats off to reading” – hat making at the library
• “Reading is a piece of cake!” cake party
• “Dalmatian hotdog party: 101 reasons to read!”
