Pat Hatt created and published sixty case histories of adult learners with learning disabilities. Pat’s case histories are based on learners living in Ontario and fall into one of the three clusters of learning disabilities:
Within these three clusters Pat developed case histories of learners at five different literacy levels doing the following tasks or demonstrations: writing, listening and speaking, reading and math.
Individual learner goals within the case histories are based on common areas of interest to learners:
Each of Pat’s case histories includes literacy demonstrations and accommodations. Demonstrations are literacy tasks that people need to perform in real life. Accommodations are different ways of approaching a task that help learners be more successful. Pat gives the example of wearing glasses to read if you have impaired vision. For more information on literacy demonstrations and accommodations refer to the chapter Literacy Demonstrations, Skills Integrity & Appropriate Accommodations in this guide.
On the following pages we present three of Pat’s cases. We have adapted Pat’s work so that the examples reflect the situation in Nunavut. Each adult learner in the case histories has been assigned one of Nunavut Arctic College’s academic levels - 110, 120 and 130.
