I have always done very well in English and didn’t realize I could tutor someone who was having problems in literacy. Our school had a Volunteer Fair at our High School and I saw the display on Peer Youth Tutoring. It was really interesting to see that I could take a training course in tutoring my peers. I signed up and in November took the tutoring training. I couldn’t believe all that I learned for myself let alone how I could help others. I have now been tutoring since November 18 and it’s been a good experience. Volunteering has really built up my self-confidence and makes me feel really good about helping a peer. It also has helped me understand students who have a learning disability as my student has. I have learned that it takes some students longer to learn something or they need to learn in different ways. My training really helped me prepare for my student. It really feels good to help someone and to see the look of confidence on their face that "now I get it". It really is a great feeling to know that I helped that student feel better about themselves and help them improve in their literacy skills. I would recommend volunteering in peer tutoring helping others in your community to change a problem into a positive. It really makes you feel really good.

I have been receiving tutoring for one year now. I have a really hard time doing math and my tutor has really helped me. I look forward to meeting with my tutor. She makes it fun and I really learn.

I have fun learning with my tutor. PYT has helped me a lot with my writing and my spelling. After a while, you actually want to come and see its not all work, like school. Tutoring is helping me with my reading and spelling. I have gained self-confidence and I am improving in my spelling thanks to tutoring.

I have witnessed many positive outcomes from the Peer Youth Tutoring since becoming involved. I have witnessed the tutors in action. I am delighted and amazed at the contributions they make especially for the children I support as a community family support worker. The program fosters learning in a positive and fun manner. Peer tutors make a difference for the students they help in our community. To see so many volunteer their time and give 100% of themselves to their student when together. As a family support worker many of the families who have students being tutored are very appreciative and excited that we now have a program like Huntsville Peer Youth Tutoring. I am so amazed by what this group has accomplished in just one year. It has also given a different outlook for students experiencing problems in school to one more positive.
