Alberta

The 15th Biennial World Volunteer Conference (International Association for Volunteer Effort -IAVE) was held in Edmonton August 23-27, 1998. Close to 2700 delegates from 86 countries attended the conference!

Guest speakers included the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien; the IAVE World President, Kenn Allen; Helen Lieberman from South Africa, who has worked endlessly to empower black South Africans; and Princess Zahra Aga Khan, a crusader for social issues; among others.

One day of the four-day conference was set aside for off-site visits. PALS - Project Adult Literacy Society hosted two gentlemen form Japan for the afternoon; Koji Matsuoka, who teaches at the University of Kobe and Seishi Arima, who is the Manager of a social participation group in Tokyo. Koji acted as translator for Seishi - and Seishi acted as a student in a lesson demonstration! Both were interested in our base funding and fundraising projects, particularly the August casino.

They had never heard of Laubach Literacy and were fascinated by the Each One Teach One concept. We were able to share knowledge, materials and souvenirs with them.

The year 2001 has been declared as International Year of the Volunteer by the United Nations. As the world shrinks and as all countries depend more and more on volunteers, international events like IAVE '98 will continue to provide the world with forums to share information. Perhaps one of us from PALS will see Koji and Seishi in The Netherlands in 2001!
