A Way Back

Westviking College and the Gateway Community Development Corporation have produced a 30 minute video. The title is A Way Back. The video features adults who have gone back to school. Snook, of Here and Now fame, is the story teller. Lawrence Karasek was the person in charge of making the video. He says, "People do not go to ABE classes because other people may think they are illiterate."
The Literacy Outreach Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor has also produced a video called Literacy 1-2-3. This video presents the stories of adults who have come back to school. There are people like Gar Applin from Port aux Choix, Mary Hartson from Corner Brook and Kim White from St. John's. The Literacy Outreach Centre hopes to get money to make extra copies of this video.

From Me. . . To You

From Me ... To You is a collection of stories by adult learners. These are stories about growing up in different communities. Some people tell of their experiences with the TAGS program. The book has two sections. The first part tells about personal stories. The second part presents stories the learners collected. Eileen Smith put the collection together for the Newfoundland and Labrador Rural Development Council. You can order the book from the NLRDC, P. O. Box 306, Gander, NF A1V 1W7 (Phone: 709-256-8833). Copies of the first printing are free.

Strong as the Ocean

Strong as the Ocean: Women's Work in the Newfoundland and Labrador Fisheries is a project of the Newfoundland and Labrador Women's Fishnet. The first chapter in this book is about Louise Belbin and Violet Green. "My husband was a skipper," says Louise Belbin. "We was married a month and a half when he went away, and I never seen him no more for 11 months. When the schooner was going, he had to be gone. The first five years we was married, I hardly seen him much at all." Strong as the Ocean was edited by Frances Ennis and Helen Woodrow. The book is available from Harrish Press, 18 Leslie St., St. John's, NF A1E 2V6 (Phone: 709-753-8815, Fax: 709-753-8856). Strong as the Ocean sells for $11.95.
