New Year Resolutions

People have been making promises to themselves for a long time. New Year resolutions have been around for hundreds of years. In Babylonian times, farmers made promises to themselves to return borrowed farm equipment to their neighbors.

Most of us make resolutions; unfortunately, not all of us keep them. We make them for many reasons. We make them to improve or health, to improve our relations with family, friends, neighbors and for our personal well being.

Students from The Learning Centre in Corner Brook decided to write to us about some of their new year resolutions.
We hope you enjoy them.

My resolution for the new millennium is that I would give up sweets and gravy. I would like to walk more. I’d like to improve my writing and get a job after I finish at the Learning Centre.

In the last few years, it has been very hard without work. It is even harder without an education. I didn’t realize how important an education was until I lost my job. At the Learning Centre I have learned to read, write, and do arithmetic. I’m starting to write my own story. I hope to complete it in the year 2000. My goal is to finish my education and publish my story.

In the future I would like to have a job and a family. Going to the Learning Centre will help me reach my goals.

I hope in the New Year I will be attending school because for the past two years at the Learning Centre I came a long way. I hope to get a job or help other people who can’t read and write.

I have been in this program for seven weeks and I hope to continue the program in the new year. I am happy that I am learning to read and write. I hope these skills will help me find work in the near future.

In the next few years I would like to learn to read and write. I hope the new century will mean a better future for everyone.
by Bud Murrin

I grew up in Labrador and did not have a chance to go to school. I worked with my father in the fishery. I have learned to read and write in this program. I hope to continue this program in the year 2000.

In the next few years I would like to see my wife, Gail, retire so we can go on trips together. It would be nice if we owned our house and our vehicle. Going to school is helping me understand things better.

Students from The Learning Centre in Gander have shared their resolutions with us as well. Enjoy!

This year I plan to finish the ABE program. I am interested in working with young children. I plan to do an early childhood development program. I think it would be very interesting work. Believe in yourself and you will achieve your goals.

Since this year is the beginning of the new millennium, I plan to start out fresh. I made a resolution to go back to school, get my grade 12 and go on to do something else. This is one resolution I plan to work hard at because I do not want to fail. Getting an education will give me the future I want. Keep working everyone.

In the new millennium I would like to get my upgrading completed. I want to do a course in aircraft structural repair. I think this course will give me a brighter future.
by Jason Terraville

This year I plan to walk every day and eat lots of fruit and vegetables.

I plan to finish my ABE certificate in the new millennium. I would also like to improve my writing and speak English more fluently.
