Literacy Development Council-
New Staff Members ( continued)

Kim: Learners are our focus it is important for learners to express their needs to us and any other groups who represent them. the 1-800 hotline is a good way to contact us with any concerns, questions, and suggestions. As Della did in the past, I will continue to consult with learners about our work. It is vital to have learners' ideas and opinions because it is their needs we want to address. We want learners to feel that they are the reason the Council exists!

Don: Congratulations on your new position with the LDC. Can you tell us a little bit about your past work experience and or schooling?

Jennifer: Most of my work experience was with the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEG). I worked there as an Executive Assistant for over seven years. During that time, I have completed many computer and professional development courses. I am working on a part-time basis towards by Business Administration Diploma right now. I am excited about my new job. Helping to promote literacy in this province will be a real challenge.

Don: Part of your responsibility is answering calls on our toll free number, 1-800-563-1111. Can you tell us what kind of infomlation is available to learners should they call this number?

Jennifer: I feel that our toll free number (1-800- 563-1111) is one of the most important services we have. It is our direct link to learners. We can tell them about the services and resources available throughout the province. We give out information about all kinds of literacy programs including the ABE Level I centres, Laubach Literacy, and Teachers on Wheels. We also give out information about upcoming literacy events such as Family Literacy Day and International Literacy Day. Learners and tutors can also request books, videos, and information pamphlets or we can direct them to other groups who may have other resources available.

Don: Many of our learners visit St. John's from time to time. Where are you located and what times can we visit your office?

Jennifer: We are located on the 2nd Floor, 29 Hallett Crescent, St. John's. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please drop by and say hello if you are in the area. Our office is located just a few minutes drive, from the Avalon Mall. Hope to see you soon!
