Charlie Greene became involved with the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1999. Later he served as chair of the Finance Committee and presently he is a member of the Executive Committee and Council Chair.

Charlie's commitment and dedication to volunteerism is longstanding. He has served on the St. Edward's Advisory Committee for the Integration of the Neighborhood School Structure as official spokesperson. He also served as head coach for the Holy Heart High School hockey team for seven years. and coached the "Under 8 Girls'" soccer team in Conception Bay South for two years. As branch manager of the Bank of Montreal, Newfoundland Drive in St. John's, Charlie is still able to find time in his busy day to train on the pond for the Royal St. John's Regatta.

Frank E. Clarke is one of the newest members of the Literacy Development Council and holds the position of Secretary. Frank Clarke is a retired educator residing in Victoria, Newfoundland. He is a long time volunteer at the local, provincial, and national level. Currently, he is a member of the Town Council of Victoria where he has served for more than 28 years. He is Secretary/treasurer of the Conception Bay North Joint Councils Association.

Hope Colbourne is the program co-ordinator of the Family Resource Centre in Griquet. She has been involved in a number of literacy projects and programs on the Northern Peninsula for quite some time. Hope is also a member of the District #2 School Board and Chair of the policy committee.

Councillor Lucy Stoyles was elected April 30, 1996. Lucy has been active in the community for many years and has received numerous awards for her involvement, including Mount Pearl Citizen of the Year, VOCM Volunteer of the Year, Canada 125 Commemorative Medal Recipient, Honorary Kinette, and the Norm Carr Award. Lucy currently serves as Chair of the Northeast Avalon Joint Council Chair of Mount Pearl's Technical Services Committee, Planning and Land Use Committee, and she represents the City on the Mount Pearl Public Library Board. She is also an active member of the Mount Pearl Chamber of Commerce.

Barb Marshall co-ordinates Partners for Learning in Weste St. Modeste, Labrador. Barb taught in the regular school system in the eighties. She also taught at the adult basic education centres set up by the Fish Food and Allied Workers (FFAW) in the early nineties. Barb moved back to Labrador to teach adult basic education. She has been working with Partners in Learning since 1996. Barb is very interested in literacy, she loves working in partnership with learners and their families. She helps provide one-on-one tutoring. she writes a plain language newspaper, and helps with Books for Babies. Barb does many other things to support literacy in her region, too numerous to mention. Barb is the proud mother of two boys - Ian (10), and Eric (7). She lives in Lanse au Loop with her husband Shawn.

Brent Howell is one of the Associate District Administrators at the Corner Brook Campus, College of the North Atlantic, and has worked in the public college system since 1989. Prior to moving to Corner Brook, Brent worked at the St. Anthony Campus and Gander Campus. Brent has been actively involved in numerous volunteer groups over the years and has a keen interest in promoting literacy programs and services.

Della Coish is Director of the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. She has worked in the literacy field since 1995. Della was Coordinator of the Fogo Island Literacy Association for a three-year period and has been involved in a variety of literacy and education-oriented projects in the province. Della graduated from Memorial University with a Master of Educational Psychology (Counseling) in October 2000 and assumed her new role as Director of the Council in November 2000.

Patricia McCarthy has worked as Administrative Assistant for the Literacy Development Council for the past year and a half. She is the mother of two boys - Joey (age 9), and Danny (age 8).
