Resettlement, Past and Present
Moving Away from Home

resettlement book cover

This is a book researched and written by Joanne Morgan. There are stories of people who moved from islands in Placentia Bay to such communities as Swift Current, Arnold's Cove and Come by Chance. One story is about Mose and Letha Rodway who moved from Kingwell to Clarenville in 1963. Here is part of their story: "The resettlement program was at its peak in 1967 when the last of the families moved out of Kingwell. Mose recalls the day when they left their home in Kingwell. 'When we boarded up the house and left, it was a sad day not knowing if you were going to see it anymore. We didn't know if we were going to have to return to Kingwell.' Some people received government grants for resettling, but Mose did not get paid for moving. He got $300 when he sold his house. The new owner floated it to Arnold's Cove and the house is now on Kingwell Crescent." This book also has a section on present resettlement. There is a story about a fish plant worker who moved to Alberta and another who is trying to stay in Newfoundland. There are questions throughout this book to help learners remember and understand what they read. This book is published by Trinity-Placentia Development Association, P.O. Box 129, Come by Chance, NF, A0B 1N0.

King's Cove Head:
The Light Tower, A Way of Life

King's Cove book cover

This book was researched and written by Linda Hayley Bath. The book tells the story of the lighthouse at King's Cove Head. The book is interesting, but learners may need someone to help them read it. Here is a short piece from the book: "Lighthouses take many forms, but there are two main groups: wave-swept structures and land-based structures. Wave-swept structures are usually towers. They are built in very exposed areas. The King's Cove Head light tower is a land-based, freestanding, cast-iron tower. It stands today as it did when it was first assembled in 1893." You can get this book from the Bonavista South Regional Development Association, General Delivery, Plate Cove East, Bonavista Bay, NF, A0C 2C0.
