International Literacy Day Celebrations

Used Book Fair

The Clarenville office of Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) helped to celebrate International Literacy Day on September 8th by holding a used book sale. Other partners who helped to organize the initiative and donated materials included staff members from local offices of Department of Development and Rural Renewal, Department of Human Resources and Employment, Health and Community Services - Eastern Region and Random North Development Association.

The HRDC Manager, Doug Johnson, expressed his appreciation to everyone who donated materials for the sale and especially to the many people who purchased items and made the event such a huge success raising $415.05. All proceeds were donated to the Laubach Literacy Council’s Summer Reading for Fun Program. Remaining items were donated to the Salvation Army Thrift Store which opened recently in Clarenville


CD Launch

The Rabbittown Learners Program celebrated International Literacy Day on September 8, 2000 with an open house and the launching of their promotional CD entitled, “Rabbittown Learners Program Success Stories”. This CD highlights the success stories of a number of adult learners. Funding for this CD was provided by the National Literacy Secretariat, Human Resources and Development Canada. Special guests, who helped celebrate the day included Ms. Luanne Leamon, Assistant Deputy Minister of Literacy, Department of Education, and the Honourable Lloyd Matthews, Minister of Finance, who presented a donation of $26,000 to the program on behalf of the Department of Education.


“Voices” Literacy Project

The cofounder and managing editor of “Voices” literacy publication is looking for learner writings that could appear in the January 2001 issue. During the past eight years the publication has featured learner writings from across North America. It is an opportunity to give learners/authors a chance to publish their writings. The author of stories that are accepted for publication will receive a $25 honorarium and their work will be distributed in the “Voices” newsletter across Canada.
