Congratulations Kandace!
photo of Kandace

Kandace graduated from Central School in June this year, and has not stopped smiling since! It wasn't "a piece of cake" says Kandace, but the pride she feels made the struggle worthwhile. Kandace had difficulties with school, especially with comprehension, starting in elementary school. She quit school in grade 9, and began working at a fast food outlet. But Kandace always knew that completing her education was important. So, she tried going back ... several times in fact, but each time she became frustrated and gave up.

Last spring however, Kandace was referred to Project Literacy by Career Directions. She was matched with her tutor, Delores, and started the year-long process of upgrading. Kandace was immediately put at ease by Delores' warm, positive nature and credits Delores with giving her the inspiration and enouragement she needed.

Although Kandace originally planned on getting her GED, she decided to pursue her grade 12 through Central School instead. She struggled and often considered quitting, but she says the minute one of her teachers let her try on a cap and gown, she made up her mind that dropping out was no longer an option! Kandace received marks in the high 90's for the courses she took, and with her confidence at an all time high, she feels that her future now holds endless possibilities! As Kandace says, "If I can graduate, I can do anything!" Her goal right now is to travel to Mexico and Europe, knowing that if she decides to pursue further education down the road, she has the necessary literacy and study skills. Keep smiling, Kandace!

"Project Literacy changed a should, into a want!"

As you are all aware, Patti Boyle, Project Literacy's Executive Director, is moving to the Lower Mainland. On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Project Literacy, I want to say how sorry we are to see her leave, and to thank her for her hard work and dedication. Since Patti joined our staff, the growth of this organization has far exceeded expectations. She has set high standards for a new Executive Director to follow, and her vision and passion are going to be hard to replace. We will miss her.

THANK YOU!!

Barb Donaldson
President, Board of Directors
