Assessment
The expertise of the assessors was a
significant factor for success. Their many years of experience as
elementary educators increased the reliability and validity of the assessment data collected. Furthermore, their
commitment to remain with the project from beginning to end contributed to the reliability and validity factors.
There were no changes made to the objectives.
The impact of this project is multifaceted. It has and continues to have an impact on the students and
teachers in the classroom, on provincial teachers and administrators, on educational policy developers, and on
community based literacy groups. There has been an increase in volunteer involvement with this project.
Examples of the impact are reported below:
- The researchers have designed and implemented a new model of mentoring
- Research teachers have adopted new literacy practices
- Researchers continue to be invited to present workshops and develop materials for provincial teachers,
librarians, administrators, and community groups
- New relationships with groups and other organizations are continuing to evolve: training the trainers for
local Frontier College and YMCA leadership program
- This research has led to an increase in access to books. As a result, the children in the
research school have stated they read more now
- Boys' attitudes toward reading have improved
- New partnerships/relationships have been established between St. Thomas University and School
District

- The researchers have contributed to the knowledge on boys and literacy
