Boys' and Girls' Literacy: Closing the Gap provides strategies to address the literacy
performance of young boys and girls. The boys' reading scores improved in
addition to their attitude toward reading - and so did the girls'! Literature circles,
male mentors, and literature that appeals to boys'/girls' interests, in addition to
committed volunteers, teachers, and researchers, has proven to be a successful
partnership between School District 18 and St. Thomas University.
Dianne Wilkins
Director of Education
School District 18
It has been our pleasure to partner in this project over the last two years with our
grade four and five children. The opportunity to share in such a cooperative effort
with the St. Thomas University community has been very rewarding. For both our
children and our teachers, it has been a wonderful learning experience.
The experience that this project has provided and the insights we have gained through our involvement will serve our whole school community for many years. In particular, it has brought renewed attention to the need to provide a wider range of opportunities for our boys. Whether with teaching strategies or the actual provision of material resources, our school will never be the same.
We are a better school, providing a higher level of opportunity, for having taken part in this project. We would be remiss if we did not take this opportunity to thank those involved for including us in this wonderful growth experience.
