This orientation leads to the recovery of lost models and traditions and to the restructuring of misrepresented ones....When used Judiciously it enhances and extends the individual in positive ways and alters society in ways which enhance both individuals and society.7

Finally, a third example of the mating of Freire's ideas to liberal macro-contextual assumptions is to be found in an article which proposes what the author calls "liberation: an alternative to remediation", a Freiran-based alternative to usual adult basic education programs for the poor. On a practical level, the author suggests that a "problem- solving" form of education for "disadvantaged" employees and potential employees be coupled with increased opportunities for employee participation in decision-making in the workplace:

Participating and potential employees must be encouraged to identify major issues they face in the workplace, to share their knowledge in resolving these problems, to express their feelings and aspirgtions, and to identify, and implement their intentions.8

The author sees benefits for both employers and "disadvantaged" employees:

When employees are given freedom and increased responsibility, productivity and quality of product increase, while absenteeism and turnover drop.... Encouraging individuals to be free, autonomous, creative and decisive on the job not only promotes more effective participation in the workplace, but has an impact on the family and the community: it enables persons to be more human, to feel love and compassion, to experience identity, integrity, hope, and courage. Whether we are concerned with these basic human values, or only with improving productivity and quality output, we need to move beyond simple remediation in educational programs for employees and potential employees.9

Here the writer 'expresses the belief that the liberation of the impoverished worker can be obtained in large part as a gift from capitalist employers, who need only realize that through giving up some of their class power (i.e. their control over production), they will attain even greater profits.
