Writing at Work |
Writing at Work is a resource that describes the writing used in many occupations
in the workplace. The descriptions and examples use the language of HRSDC’s
Essential Skills Research Project. Each chapter examines the purpose, style,
organization and use of such writing forms as memos, entry forms, logbooks,
bulletins and regulations. Writing at Work provides suggested activities for
practice and over 50 workplace documents. This resource is aimed at both adult
and high school programs. |

Implementation of TOWES Test of Workplace
Essential Skills |
The British Columbia Construction Industry Skills Improvement Council in
partnership with Bow Valley College, will implement the Test of Workplace
Essential Skills (TOWES), a Canadian-made assessment tool based on real work
life examples for use by workplace literacy practitioners and others. They will do
this by developing a system that surrounds the use of TOWES. This includes initial
job profiling, selection of test items, production of customized test booklets,
standardized administration and marking, detailed feedback to test-takers and users
and support for effective upgrading. They will then market the product by using
demo projects to test the application of TOWES in a wide variety of workplaces
and situations. They will also establish an Advisory Committee, to oversee this
project. The principle outcome of this project is to provide a widely available tool
to measure reading text, using documents and solving problems using numbers in
the context of the Canadian workplace. The project will result in the completion of
a 350- item test bank, protocols for job profiles, reporting systems, guides for test
takers and administrators, a certificate course for markers, a business plan for
TOWES and related products. A detailed written report on all activities and the
progress of this project will be submitted to the National Literacy Secretariat. |

experiences that target employment or access to further training, 2) to determine
the basic skills required for the jobs of Steel Fabricator and Steel Fabricator
Foreman, 3) to identify some additional training needs in moving from the position
