| Textiles Human Resources Council | Essential skills training and development for Canada’s textile industry | On-line survey: Work with fifteen textile companies to develop essential skills - including literacy, numeracy, communication, and computer skills - identified the needs of thousands of textile workers and tailored training to meet these needs. This process has laid the groundwork for web-based training that, in addition to essential skills, will address health and safety, quality control, the environment, and energy conservation. Final Report: 5 pilot projects were set up with five textile companies in order to analyze essential skills levels and to work jointly with management, unions, and employees to develop Workplace Needs Assessments and make recommendations for training. The main goals of the pilot projects were 1) to develop a standard process model for analyzing training needs, 2) to build the in-house training capacity at pilot sites, 3) to develop a standard curriculum for essential skills training, 4) to use the results of the pilot projects to promote essential skills training throughout the industry by developing a “tool kit” for interested companies, 5) to establish the link between essential skills training and more advanced technical training. |
| Textiles Human Resources Council | Web-Based Workforce Training Needs Assessment Tool | The Textiles Human Resources Council (THRC) will create a web-based training needs assessment tool to be known as “WebTNA”. This tool will meet an established need for a cost-effective, readily available and sustainable tool to assess learner literacy, numeracy and other essential skills needs. They will improve coordination and information sharing by sharing its products with the textile industry through its paid membership. This program is being adapted from tools and surveys developed during the Council ’s Foundations programs to a web-based format to enable companies to undertake regular assessments with a minimum of outside assistance. Industry-wide information will be gathered by the THRC to identify skills gaps and assist in developing future skills development programs. |
| Textiles Human Resources Council | Occupational Profiles | Job competency profiles were created to provide information on the knowledge and skills required for individual textile occupations (supervisors, mechanics, knitters, weavers, dyers and finishers). These profiles are ideal for companies to use in hiring, succession and human resources planning. |
| Toronto Ironworkers Training and Rehabilitation Centre | Literacy and Skills Upgrading | The centre will create and test a program aimed at upgrading skills of existing and new members. |
