Writing Strategies

  • Discussion with workplace
    –Record minutes from team meeting.
  • Lesson on recording minutes
    –If possible, have format that workplace uses.
    –Refer to samples of minutes from team meetings.
    –Conduct mock team meetings and record minutes.


  • In many workplaces, all workers are expected to take a turn at recording minutes.
  • When I have asked what training is provided, the answer is, “It’s your turn to take the minutes.”
  • In team meetings, it is necessary to record the items that are discussed and the actions that are agreed upon. Motions are usually not made and the style is informal. Nevertheless, these writing skills must be taught to prepare learners for the job.

 


Vocabulary and Spelling

  • Obtain vocabulary list from workplace.
  • Use it to familiarize learners with spelling and meaning of words they would encounter frequently on the worksite.
  • Include acronyms
  • Could compose your own list based on the worksite and occupation.

Oral Communication Strategy

  • Oral Communication Profile
    –Interact with supervisors to provide/receive information, explanation, direction.
    –Example: Interact with supervisors to receive work orders
  • Lesson on listening and taking direction
    –Role playing actual work situation
    –Could lead to writing activity on which learners write down directions.
  • Sequencing becomes a factor.
  • You must ask, “What is the language at work?”
