As well there is a cultural program called Touch the Spirit that is offered three 1/2 days per week. The Canadian Adult Reading Assessment (CARA) and individual goals are used to assess learner capabilities and monitor success towards goals. The Circle of Courage, medicine wheel and personal storying are used to guide teaching. This curriculum is based on Aboriginal teachings. Elders visit the program approximately 3 times per week. Students are motivated to enroll in this program because it is a safe place where they can get back into school. Another 10% of the funding comes from the provincial government's Associated Entities Fund. Program Challenges: The program faces the following challenges: finding one-on-one tutors, permanent space, homeless participants, childcare and transportation. |
