III. Summarizing Concepts

Following the modeling of the Self-Questioning strategy, the instructor conducts a group discussion to reinforce:

A. The steps in the Self-Questioning strategy and

B. The types of questions asked.

A. Steps in the Self-Questioning Strategy:

The instructor:

  1. Displays a previously prepared chart with items #1 - 6, as shown on the right side of Box 2 (also Appendix E).
  2. Has participants identify which of the steps were carried out before reading, which were carried out during reading and which after reading.
  3. Brackets and labels the respective steps as indicated on the left side
    of the chart (Box 2) and
  4. Reinforces the rationale underlying each step:
    a) to set purposes before reading.
    b) to interact with the text and notice relevant information during reading and
    c) to check understanding of the story after reading.

BEFORE READING
1. LOOK at the TITLE

2. LOOK at the COVER PICTURE.
ASK questions, think of possible answers

WHILE READING
3. READ the FIRST SECTION. Look for answers to the questions.
STOP. -Think back - Were any questions answered?
- Ask new questions - Think of possible answers.

4. READ the next section.
STOP. -Think back - Were any questions answered?
- Ask new questions - Think of possible answers.

5. REPEAT steps 3 and 4 until the story is completed.

AFTER READING
6. THINK about the author's message.
THINK about your own response to the story.
THINK about your feelings. What did you like? Why? What didn't you like? Why?
