B. Types of Questions to Ask:

The instructor:

  1. Returns to the questions generated and recorded on a chart during the modeling portion of the lesson (Box 1).
  2. Leads participants to infer commonalities among the questions generated and at the same time
  3. Highlights on the Box 1 chart the first words in the questions (that is who, what, where, when, why, and how), emphasizing the question categories and their application to any reading situation as a means for aiding comprehension and recall.

IV. Guided Practice/Group Tasks

The instructor:

  1. Distributes copies of the book The Wednesday Surmise: and
  2. Directs small groups (2 participants to 1 volunteer) to read the story for themselves, aloud together in unison.
  3. Makes the purpose of the activity clear - to practice:

    a) reading fluency and
    b) the Self-Questioning strategy.

Participants and volunteers:

  1. Practise the Self-Questioning strategy while reading The Wednesday Surprise:
  2. Choose, from among an array of books, selections to take home to read for enjoyment, and the practice of the Self-Questioning strategy and
  3. Sign-out books to take home (see Appendix A, Book I for form).

NOTE: More than one lesson may be required to accommodate all of the suggested lesson steps. The instructor may elect to focus on Part B in a second session.
