The Story Map

II. Modeling

The instructor:
  1. Illustrates how the story map may be used as a guide for retelling using a story previously read by the group or a story that she has read for home reading between sessions. If the story is new to participants, it is read orally first.

Let me show you how this works. Before sharing the story, I would think of the story parts - the beginning, the middle and the end and what information from my story fits these categories. When I first started to do this, I would write a few words (jet notes) in each box to help my memory, as I did with this story.

    a) Displays a previously prepared story map with jot notes (not sentences) to model the process (Box 9), using the story Sara and the Door (1977), by Virginia Allen Jensen
