| BOX 8: THE STORY MAP b) Demonstrates oral story retelling from her jot notes on the map (Box 10). The story I'd like to share is ... Sara and the Door by Virginia Allen Jensen. This is a story about a riffle girl named Sara. (I think Sara is about three years old.) It is winter and she went into the house after she had been playing outside. She was all bundled up with a hat, scarf and miffs (Character and Setting). She closed the door, but in the process, her coat got stuck and she couldn't reach the knob to free it. The knob was too high for her (Problem). She tried to slide out of her coat, but that didn't work. She called for help, but no one answered. She began to cry. Her big tears splashed down on her coat buttons (Plot Outline). At first she tried to pull the buttons right off her coat. Then she discovered the button holes and undid the buttons, one by one, pulled off her coat and walked away. She realized that she could look to herself to solve her problems (Resolution). c) Reinforces the idea that the map serves as a memory cue and that the ultimate goal is to retell and share the story orally and not to refer to the jot notes on the story map. |
