WORD MEANING MINI-LESSON

A sample mini-lesson on using context clues to infer word meanings follows. In these examples, the use of both text and picture cues is modeled.

Procedure

The instructor:
  1. Asks participants:

    Which words did you have trouble understanding?
    How did you solve your problems with word meanings?

  2. On the chalkboard or chart paper, creates a list of the words participants identify as troublesome;

  3. Records and discusses the clues participants identify as helpful in inferring word meanings and models her own think-alouds as suggested in Box 20.

  4. Invites participants to tell her about folktales from their own country in their dialogue journals. These will be shared with the total group next week to help develop an appreciation of the customs and values of the cultures of others.
