BOX 20: INFERRING WORD MEANINGS FROM TEXT AND
PICTURE CUES
"Shuttle"
Text Cues:
...For days and months she worked, her
shuttle flashing through the threads. (P 8)
After
two years, blood dripped from her eyes Into her hand. Down her hand
onto the shuttle it ran, and...(P.9)
Picture Cues:
Widow weaving, thread attached to a shuttle which is in her
hand. (p.7)
Close up of hands weaving the
brocade with the blood flowing down onto the shuttle and dripping onto
the thread. (p. 10)
Think Aloud:
The
picture provides a word-for-word image of the text. We can see what
the shuttle looks like and can infer that it is the tool that is used
to move the thread back and forth across the loom.
The verb "shuttle"
is also used in conjunction with transporting people back and forth -
in space, on a bus...
"Brocade"
Text Cues:
"...She could weave beautiful brocades that seemed to come alive
under her fingers.
One day, while she was at the market selling some at her weavings, she
saw a most wonderous painting..." (p.1)
"Why
don't you do a weaving of the painting? Your weavings are so lifelike
that, as you work on it every day, It will be almost like living
there..."
... "You are no longer making brocades to sell..." (p.8)
"What a beautiful brocade It was..." (continues to describe
brocade...)(p.9)
Picture Cues:
Market
scene showing widow holding a brocade, displaying it to customers who
appear interested in buying It. (p. 3-4)
Close
up of hands weaving the brocade. (p. 10)
Widow
with finished brocade Milch matches the description on page 9 of the
text. (p. 10-11)
Think Aloud:
The
author uses the word Brocade and Weavings to indicate that the widow
makes and sells.
Also, there seem to be connections between
the words in the story and the illustrations that help us to
understand what a brocade is. The text on pages 1 and 8 and the
picture on pages 3 and 4 refer to the widow selling the weavings.
The illustration on page 11 and 12 matches the description given on
page 9.
