II. Guided Practice
The instructor:
- Directs the working groups to read and discuss p.46/47 in the
book Canada Votes and to learn about:
a) colloquialisms associated with elections and
b) how colloquialisms come to be created.
III. Making Connections
The instructor:
- Invites participants to discuss the appropriateness of using
animals and animal characteristics as metaphors to represent
people's roles and behaviours in elections. For example
"pork
barrelling" calls up the image of officials feeding at the
public trough or buying votes through patronage.
- Solicits the sharing of similar metaphors with which participants
may be familiar that encapsulate people's behaviour - for example:
"sly fox" - describes crafty,
underhanded behaviour
"blow hard" - portrays a braggart
"neighborhood herald" - characterizes a
gossip
- Suggests that participants
"keep an eye out"
for more colloquial expressions to add to the bulletin board
display begun in Session Seven.
