The T1 and Schedule 1 |
| To the Teacher: The first part of this activity is to be read for information. We found that certain questions kept recurring when we talked to students about paying taxes. The material here could be used as a reading exercise, and we have found that most reading exercises lead to discussions in class. It could, thus, be used to start a discussion about taxation. You might also use the material for a mini-research activity. The text could be given to the students to read for themselves first. They could then be asked to find the answers to various questions. For example, What is the difference between total income and taxable income? If I am a sole support parent, can I claim anything for my kids? The information given here is important, but it doesn't really lend itself to a real-world activity. It may be thought of as an information document. The second part of this activity (2b and 2c) includes a simplified T1 as well as a simplified Schedule 1. Our simplified documents retain the sections most commonly applicable to the LBS students with whom we held focus groups. |
