graphic of the words "Meet and Greet"

The students you meet in this issue of First-Time Readers attend literacy centres throughout the province. Student go to these centres to improve their reading and writing skills in order to continue their education. Some students drive to and from the centres while others stay in an apartment or find boarding accommodations. If you would like to introduce yourself in a future issue of our newspaper, please send us a recent picture and a short message about yourself. You may also send us information about the program you are attending.

photo of Alvin ColbourneHi, my name is Alvin Colbourne. I had a number of jobs. I worked in the woods for a while, I also fished. I also worked at construction in Ontario. I was also in the outfitting business. Now I am back in school trying to improve my reading and writing skills. I would like to become a natural resources technician. I am pretty sure I would enjoy that line of work.

Hello, my name is Ford Hancock. I am from Roddicton. I came to the Literacy Centre in January. It is a long way from home but it is worth it. I am doing really. well. The people here are great. When I finish school I want to become a welder. I will probably look for a good job in Alberta .

Hi, my name is Troy Osmond. I am from Wesleyville. I am twenty-six years old I would really like to become a pipe fitter. I will probably have to move away to get a good job. That will not bother me if I find a job I really like.

photo of Thomas WisemanHello, my name is Thomas Wiseman. I am from Conche. I fished for the past thirty-two years. Last year I got sick and had to give up fishing. I loved my work out on the water. It was my life.

I decided to come back to school this year. After I improve my reading and writing skills I plan to become a welder. I know I will enjoy the trade.

My name is Doreen Quinlan. I am living in Grand Falls-Windsor. I really like to cook and sew. I also like working with people. When I finish school I plan to become a teacher's aide. I think I would really enjoy that kind of work.
