Our Trip to Marystown
by Victor Stoodley

It all started on Thursday, Oct. 25 and I was living in Bishop's Falls at the time. I got up at 10:00 and had a coffee. I had to leave 10:30 to go to Grand Falls-Windsor to the school and meet the boys because they didn't know where I lived. We left the school at 11:00. I went in my car and Joseph and Derrick followed me to Bishop's Falls so I could get my gear. I put it in the car and off we went.

We arrived at the hotel about 4:00. We had wine and cheese and then Tracy and I went to The Dory, a bar across the road. They had a karoake machine and I got up and sang three songs. The next morning at 9:00 we had a workshop with Olive Reeves. In the afternoon we had a workshop with Dorothy Silver and Ed Oldford. That night we had a nice dinner and watched the Loop Troop perform. We also practiced our line dancing and listened to the band playing. Later we went downstairs to the dance, we had a good time.

On Saturday morning we had the AGM and the round table. In the afternoon we had some free time so I went to the mall for awhile. Around 3:00 we planted a tree and got a group picture taken. Around supper time I put on my suit to go to the banquet. After the banquet we went down stairs to the Halloween dance and everyone was all dressed up and having a good time.

The next morning was Sunday and I got up and we took our gear, loaded up the car, and left at 10:00 to go home. On our way home we stopped at a restaurant to get something to eat. Then we got on the road again and headed home. hen Joseph dropped me off in Bishop's Falls it was about 3:30 and I was glad to be home. It was my second conference, but my first time in Marystown. I hope I can go again next year.

Conference in Marystown
by Joseph Girard

We left Grand Falls-Windsor on Thursday, October 25 to go to Marystown for a three day conference. When we arrived in Marystown we had to wait on Lillian in order to register for our room. Then we went out with Orv and Olive for supper. We came back to the hotel and then Derrick and I went out to the bar called the Little Dory. The first workshop was at 9:00 with Olive. It lasted until 12:00.

We all went for lunch. Then I went to the second workshop. Ed and Dorothy hosted the Tree Workshop. On Saturday we went to an AGM meeting and also a Round Table meeting that was held in the same room. After the meeting we all went for lunch. We had the afternoon on Saturday to ourselves.

At 3:00 we had to go over to the town hall for the tree planting. Later we went to a banquet and watched a play. We all listened to speeches from other people. Kenneth won an award from the Laubach Literacy. At 10:00 we went downstairs to a Halloween dance. We saw people dressed up in costumes. Judges selected the best costumes.

On Sunday we left to come home about 10:00 that morning. We stopped for dinner in the restaurant. After dinner we left the restaurant and we went home. I arrived home at 4:30 and my family was happy to see me.

Marystown Conference 2001
by Kenneth Faulkner

Lillian picked me up about 7:00 on Thursday, October 25. We arrived at Hotel Marystown around 12:30. We had lunch at the hotel restaurant. After that Lillian had to go to a meeting. I went upstairs, unpacked, listened to some music, and then came down to the lobby. I helped the registration committee get the name tags ready. I got the sheets for the door prizes.

On Thursday night, between 7:00 and 9:00, we had a Meet and Greet. At the Meet and Greet we met new students and volunteer tutors.

On Friday at 9:00 we had a Learners' Workshop. Olive Reeves had a workshop for students. We learned about putting endings on words and some tips for spelling. Everyone enjoyed this workshop.

At 1:00 on Friday, all the students had a TREE Workshop. At this workshop we talked about public speaking and getting funding from the government. We had supper and a high school group performed for us. We practiced line dancing and then we all went downstairs to the bar and danced.

Saturday we had our Annual General Meeting. From that we went straight into the Round Table discussions. We had a "decorate your doorknob" contest and I collected all the doorknob hangers. Kim and Barb did the judging. A Labrador council won.

We all got dressed to go to the banquet for supper. I was Lillian's date at the banquet. There were a lot of speeches. The Minister of Education and the Mayor of Marystown were there. A Susie Day Volunteer Tutor Award was given out and Paula Power was the winner. They announced the Student of the Year Award and it was Kenneth Faulkner. I got the shock of my life. My palms were all sweaty! Mata presented me with the award. My plaque is hanging at the Literacy Centre. I have to present it to next year's winner. Lillian was presented with a picture for being president. We had a great time.
