Man throwing money

SAVE...SAVE...SAVE!

Shopping for bargains can be confusing. You need to know what the savings are. Most discounts are offered in percentages. Some are offered through two for the price of one, or buy one and get one free. This exercise will help you understand which discounts give you the best savings.

Betty was shopping for a new winter coat. She visited five stores, three of the stores had 20% discounts, one had a 30% discount, and one store had a 40% discount on all winter outerwear. Betty understood that she would get the best bargain in the store with the 40% discount sale. She saw three coats that she liked in that store. They were priced at $120, $150 and $180. Betty also realized that a 15% tax had to be added to the price of each coat.

Answer the following questions about the savings on each coat.

  1. What will the $120 coat cost after the discount and before the taxes are added?

  2. What is the discount on the $150 coat?

  3. How much tax will she have to pay if she decides to buy the $180 coat?

Hint: Some of these questions have several steps. Read the question several times before attempting the problem.
