Canadian Automotive Repair and Service Council National Strategy for Essential Skills Development Project The project will design, develop and implement, on a national basis, a consistent and comprehensive essential skills assessment tool to assess the current essential skill level of personnel in the automotive repair and service sector. A report outlining the current essential skill levels of the industry’s work force will be generated which will allow for the development of curriculum that will remediate any identified gap in skill level of the work force. The objective is to develop and start to implement a National Essential Skills Strategy for the automotive repair and service sector. Some of the main activities:
1. Develop in-house skills and knowledge required to address essential skills needs.
2. Review and adapt / customize if necessary the essential skills profiles of seven occupations (including 3 red seal trades: truck-trailer repairer, recreation vehicle service technician, truck and transport mechanic).
3. Research existing essential skills assessment tools as per their suitability to assess essential skill levels in automotive repair and service sector.
4. Conduct assessment to identify essential skill levels of current workforce in automotive repair and service sector on a national basis to establish a baseline for future evaluation.
5. Assess existing trainings of seven occupations as per the level of essential skills and identify essential skill gaps with essential skill profiles.
6. Modify/develop training curriculum for seven occupations to address essential skill gap needs.
7. Develop a phase II proposal to address the essential skill needs of 17 other occupations - including 6 red seal trades), based on the expertise acquired during this project.
Canadian Automotive Repair and Service Council Integrated Essential Skills Development for First Nations The Canadian Automotive Repair & Service Council (CARS) will provide integrated essential skills development to First Nations communities and organizations. CARS will provide aboriginal communities with an expanded training infrastructure which would provide individuals with access to training opportunities including essential skills development, basic technical skills training, automotive and related training and life skills training.
