Communities Served: Saskatoon elementary/high/alternative schools and youth custody centres.

Program Mission and Goals: To meet the basic literacy needs of people, in the community, who need assistance.

Program Description: Frontier College started in 1899 and as such is the oldest literacy organization in existence. There are currently about 200 volunteers in the Saskatoon area and 400 learners. The number of learners that can be accommodated is dependent upon the number of volunteers. Through one-on-one tutoring, small group sessions and reading circles the program offers the following components:

  • Basic literacy
  • Intermediate literacy
  • Weekly sessions are approximately 1-2 hours
  • Life skills
  • Job preparation
  • Family literacy

Unique Features of the Program: The special relationship between tutors and learners. Bringing fun to reading and writing in an informal environment.

Source of Funds: 80% of the funding comes from HRDC and another 20% from donations.

Program Challenges: Attaining Aboriginal volunteers and publicity are the two primary concerns for the program.
