Program Mission and Goals: This program was developed to meet the needs of people who require assistance to become fully literate. It has been in operation for approximately 22 years and has approximately 75 learners enrolled with a capacity of 100. Program Description: Learn-to-Read is designed to assist individuals develop their reading and writing skills. This program is carried out largely through one-on-one tutoring. There is one full time staff member, 2 part-time staff members and 75 volunteers recruited from the community involved in the delivery of Learn-to-Read. The capabilities and needs of learners are assessed through individual interviews and assessments and the program follows the Literacy Volunteers of America curriculum. The program is involved in a learner support group, family literacy and the Prince Albert Literacy Network. Approximately 50% of the learners in this program are Metis, 10% are Inuit and 30% are First Nation. Approximately 50% of the learners are between the ages of 25-39 and 55% are female. |
